CHAPTER EIGHTEEN—Robert

“Wait here.” Robert swept both bedrooms for any sign of otherworldly presence. He went back through the den and to the front door. “Come in.”

Jenny hadn’t managed to hide her awe since they arrived in New York. First, it was the lights. Then it was the lobby of the hotel. Now, the room. She supposed the room was nice, especially in comparison to her own apartment. Though Ivan had furnished her apartment with the latest designs, there was only so much one could do in a day.

Every detail in the hotel, from the carpets to the walls and ceiling, held something that drew the eye. The colors were calm beiges with a white couch and oak furnishings.

“There’s a balcony.” She started forward.

Robert grabbed her. “You can’t go out there by yourself.”

“Then come with me.” She gave him a warm look, and Robert knew he’d never be able to resist her.

He looked at Nicholaus. The investor was holding it together, but Robert could see him itching to touch the computer that had been brought up. “Go ahead and work. I’ll watch her.”

The balcony was bigger than the standard hotel. There was enough space for a lawn, some tables, and chairs comfortably positioned to allow walking space between.

They were outside when Jenny said, “Sorry that you have to babysit me all the time.” She stood by the rail and Robert took a position at her side.

“It’s my job. You don’t need to apologize. Besides, you make it easy.” He couldn’t help but admire her body.

“Do I?” She cringed, and he could see her mind was a million miles away. Back in Miami. “No one died, but they could have, right?” She turned to him with beseeching eyes.

She wanted him to say that this fight for her womb wouldn’t lead to death, but Robert could smell war in the air.

He sighed. “I should have let the other leaders meet you. I should have held a meeting with the Order and allowed everyone the chance to court you.”

“But you didn’t because you knew it wasn’t safe, right?”

He couldn’t meet her eyes. “That’s what I said.” But he remembered his reaction to seeing Jenny for the first time in person. It had been before she’d come to the house and at a distance.

She’d been yards away while walking across campus, and even with the space between them, her beauty had almost cut his legs from underneath him. He’d wanted her instantly, and it was likely his own wishes that had led to his decision.

He hadn’t felt this way in a long time. “I didn’t want to share.”

“What?” She moved closer. “What do you mean?”

He looked at her. “I wanted you, Jenny. Before we met, I wanted you.”

He watched her eyes grow large in the balcony light. “But I thought you said…”

“I know what I said, and I’m just as much a liar as Liam is.”

They were all crazy about her. Only Nicholaus had the balls to go after what he wanted. Robert hadn’t realized what he’d been able to lose until he saw Anan’s hand on her.
